From Canadian farmland to global ambitions: Toronto jeweller Dean Davidson on staying true to his roots
Dean Davidson, founder of the eponymous Toronto-based jewellery brand, is setting his sights on international growth, guided by lessons learned far from the design studio on the Canadian farmland where he grew up.
"I want Dean Davidson to become a truly global brand," Davidson told FashionUnited. "We've built such a recognizable language around sculptural forms, hand cut stones and our signature brushed gold, and I think there is still enormous opportunity to introduce that world to a much larger audience."
That language has its origins on the Canadian prairies, where Davidson spent his childhood outdoors with the freedom to explore. "There wasn't an endless amount of stimulation around you, so you learned to really observe things: the landscape, texture, light and the changing seasons," he said.
From agronomy to design
A creative career was not an obvious option in the community he grew up in, and Davidson first followed the path in front of him. "I grew up on a farm, so becoming an agronomist felt like a very natural transition. Agriculture was the world I knew and understood. But I never really felt fulfilled by it," he said.
It was travel, and the architecture, craftsmanship and design he encountered abroad, that set him on a different course. "Once I started designing, something clicked. It brought together travel, art, design, craftsmanship and entrepreneurship, and for the first time I felt like I had found what I was supposed to be doing," he said.
The farm left its mark on the business side too. "Farming teaches you very quickly that you can work incredibly hard and still not control every outcome," Davidson said. "Weather changes, circumstances change and you adapt. Building a business is surprisingly similar."
That adaptability has been tested as the brand has grown and the job has expanded well beyond the design studio into team building, inventory, cash flow, wholesale and production. "One of the biggest lessons for me has been learning when to let go," he said. "As a founder, you're used to touching everything, but there comes a point where the business can only grow if you surround yourself with great people and trust them to do what they do best."
The design itself, however, remains unmistakably his own, with the brushed finish at its core. Developed through experiments with hand-finishing the metal, it was Davidson's answer to gold that looked too shiny. "I've always been drawn to gold that feels rich but not overly polished or precious," he said. "Today, I can see that finish from across a room and immediately recognize it as Dean Davidson."
Travel as a starting point
The shapes behind the finish come from the road, from Balinese basket weaving to Kyoto's bamboo forest and Brazil's sand dunes. Davidson said a collection usually starts with a single detail, which he strips back in the studio to its shape, proportion, texture and movement. "By the time they become jewelry, you may not immediately recognize the original reference, and I like that. The place becomes a feeling rather than a souvenir," he said.
No destination has shaped the brand more than Brazil, which has informed several collections. "There's an incredible tension in Brazilian design between modernism and nature," he said. "The architecture can be very sculptural and disciplined, while the landscape is sensual and organic. That balance feels very connected to the Dean Davidson aesthetic."
Borrowing from other cultures' crafts comes with a responsibility Davidson takes seriously, and he looks to the technique behind an object rather than the object itself. "I want the influence to be part of the story, but never feel like we're simply borrowing someone else's work," he said.
The same instinct for protecting what is distinctive shapes how he views expansion. "I don't want growth to come at the expense of what makes the brand special," Davidson said. "Ultimately, I want someone to see a piece of jewelry without a logo and know immediately that it's Dean Davidson."
